Cisco Mobile Transport over Packet Solution Enables Efficient High-Speed Connectivity Needed to Deliver Increasing Amounts of 3G and 4G Mobile Internet Traffic

SAN JOSE, Calif., February 17, 2009 - Cisco® today announced, following a successful and extensive evaluation, that IP Networks, Inc. (IPN) is implementing a Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture featuring the Cisco Mobile Transport over Packet (MToP) solution. This approach gives IPN the scale, resiliency and efficiency needed to deliver incrementally increasing amounts of 3G and 4G mobile IP traffic for operators, which is expected to increase 66 fold between 2008 and 2013, according to Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Mobile Forecast for 2008-2013.

Cisco's IP NGN technologies and expertise transform service providers into experience providers enabling them to deliver the Connected Life. Those experience providers, like IPN, are adding new revenue opportunities with a reduced time to market by delivering new and differentiated voice, video, data and mobility services.

IPN's Cisco IP Radio Access Network (RAN) managed solution enables mobile operators to provide mobile broadband cellular services to their own customers while reducing their costs of doing business.

Facts:

  • IPN is migrating its infrastructure to provide multi-homing Carrier Ethernet from the newly launched Cisco Mobile Wireless Router (MWR) 2941-DC located at the cell site and transport mobile traffic from several operators over a single, converged IP network. Mobile traffic from the cell site will be routed via the Cisco 7600 Series routers enabled to support both Pseudowires over Ethernet (PWE3) and native IP packets.
  • The Cisco MToP solution is able to support code division multiple access (CDMA) and global system for mobile communications (GSM)-based radio technologies and next-generation all-IP radios.
  • Transporting this mobile traffic across IPN's core network are the Cisco 7600 Series router and Cisco ONS 15454 optical switching platforms. This design offers the highest resiliency with generous bandwidth from cell site through the core of a network. These capabilities are enabled with the help of the new Cisco Ethernet Services Plus (ES+) line card for the Cisco 7600 Series routers.
  • IPN will be able to quickly expand its network using zero-touch deployment techniques enabled by the Cisco CNS Configuration Engine (CNS-CE). As a premier managed service provider, IPN selected the Cisco IP-service level agreement (SLA) suite and Mobile Wireless Transport Management (MWTM) system to ensure their customers of consistently high-quality service and reliability.
  • Meeting the mission-critical networking requirements of Fortune 100 corporations, large enterprises, government agencies and other service providers, IPN is extending its highly resilient services to Tier-1 mobile operators in the United States

Supporting Quotes:

  • "Value propositions of our all-optical networks include service flexibility and scalability," said Gary George, president of IP Networks. "We provide service level agreement-guaranteed IP radio access network transport using pseudowires over carrier Ethernet and native IP. An important aspect in mobile transport networks is maintaining accurate synchronization signals to minimize interference among sites and to ensure optimal inter-cell handover performance. Cisco and Brilliant Telecommunications' network timing solutions make that happen."
  • "As a global leader in providing IP-based networking solutions, Cisco has demonstrated that our IP NGN Carrier Ethernet Design and Mobile Transport over Packet solutions offer operators a cost-effective and seamless migration path to Ethernet backhaul networks, while capitalizing on the cost and efficiencies of IP/Ethernet as bandwidth demands increase," said Larry Lang, vice president and general manager of services and mobility business unit, Cisco. "The Cisco MToP solution is helping to transform mobile operator business models by providing both data offload and reducing operating expenses of the network."
