Telecommunications deregulation in many countries has led to the emergence of network operators with a wide range of owners. In particular, electricity distribution companies have diversified into telecommunications, in many cases using their regional or national grids as the basis of a core network. To enable extensions into the access area, new technology has recently become available to carry digital signals (up to a shared 1 Mbit/s) over the electrical mains distribution network. This technology is being trialled within the UK, although there are key concerns regarding both the capacity available to a customer and radio frequency interference.
