As we move into the future then, the market structure will change as regulation allows more liberalisation and operators jostle for position. Figure 1.13 outlines the direction the market is moving in. One key difference shows ISPs moving more towards content rather than network as regulatory changes allow Telcos to provide IP networks as part of the regulated businesses. Telcos are shown having moved extensively into the data market and offering broadband access. Long distance companies have moved into local services through the merger with cable companies. Although this gives a predominantly UK view, there are also signs that the US market is following similar trends.
