Optical fibre cables

Optical fibre cable systems are being deployed in access networks to carry aggregated traffic in one of two configurations: point-to-point or ‘passive optical networks’ (PONs). Point-to-point capacities of 4×2 Mbit/s are common, although 34 Mbit/s and 155 Mbit/s are also deployed. Shows an example configuration of TPON systems that are in established commercial use for fibre-to-the-kerb (FTTK) and Fibre-To-The-Building (FTTB) applications. TPON systems can provide capacities of up to 16×2 Mbit/s and offer a cost-effective alternative to point-to-point configurations for medium sized sources of traffic. PONs offering ATM-format transmission capacities up to 622 Mbit/s have also now been developed, and have been deployed by a number of network operators world-wide.
